I went to see a performance by Dance Alloy Theatre last Friday called Exposed. It was three independent performances designed around the concept of being ‘exposed’. Lord only knows what that meant.
I’m not going to describe each of the performances or how I analyzed them because the truth is that I didn’t. Modern dance is an entertaining medium but it’s also slightly confusing. Unless just about every reason behind every expression is explained to me, I’m not going to get it on my own. So why do I enjoy it? I guess it’s about movement. I love movement and inherent expressiveness contained therein.
I actually feel the same about other disciplines of dance. I’m intrigued by the form involved in everything from bharata natyam to the paso doble to hip hop. Despite the major differences in each discipline, it’s still about movement, passion and energy.
I’ve never been a great dancer myself. But I enjoyed dance in high school and college because energy is something that anyone can display. Even as a spectator now, I can still appreciate the movements and the energy required to pull off a dance.
