Fumbling Towards November

I doubt the good folks in North Carolina or Indiana would agree but I’m frakin’ sick of the Democratic primary season.  Sure I was excited to vote in the PA primary yesterday but I’m still frakin’ sick of it all.

I don’t mean to say that Hillary Clinton should get out of the race, especially after she won my state by a solid 10% points. But I wanted to comment on her rather spurious claim that she’s better positioned to compete in the general election because she’s won the big states among them New York, California, and now Penn’s Woods.

I fail to grasp how such victories translate to a general election.  A Democrat defeating a Democrat in ANY state during the Primary Season does not give us any indication of his or her ability to defeat a Republican in said state come the Fall.  Had the 2004 primary season extended long enough for PA to be relevant, I probably would’ve voted for John Edwards over John Kerry.  But I had no problem getting in line behind Kerry after he won the nomination.

PA’s primary is closed, which means that only a registered Democrat could have voted for the Democratic candidates.  While there will be some inevitable bleeding of Independent-minded Democrats towards McCain, I think that most Democrats who voted in the PA primary will vote for the Democratic nominee in the general election.

Let’s look at the Republicans and their presumed nominee – John McCain.  He was NOT the favorite among some of my friends who are solidly Republican.  They preferred Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani.  But despite their grievances with McCain, they willl still vote for him over Obama and certainly over Clinton.  Right-wing religious conservatives may balk over McCain but would they seriously consider Pro-Choice candidates like Clinton or Obama.  McCain is still against a woman’s right to choose.

In the end, this contest (just as in 2000 and 2004) still comes down to 3 states – Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Let’s just get to the general election and duke it out there.
