You are not reading a post about my past weekend in Malta. I do not hear the sound of sirens in the dreary London morning. I do not see the rain trickling down the windows outside my office. I am currently asleep in my apartment in Malta. When I wake up, I will begin my new life as a vagabond and aspiring Mediterranean Pirate, which as we all know is the training ground before moving on to the holy grail of becoming a Pirate in the South Seas.
Malta is (was?) fantastic. Check out the pictures and you might begin to understand how disgruntled I am today. I do enjoy cold weather but not this much cloudiness.
There’s an interesting contrast in styles between the past two trips I’ve taken. Barcelona was all about the city – the Gaudi temple, Casa Batlo, manmade delights, if you will. Malta is more about the natural scene – the Azure Window, the Fungus Rock, the Dingli Cliffs, the coastal fishing towns. Sure there’s natural beauty in Barcelona & manmade delights (yoi) in Malta but those aren’t what I’ll remember most fondly about each place.
Speaking of manmade delights, Malta does have a crazy nightlife. It doesn’t start up till after around midnight and then there’s tons of clubs & bars to see most of them packed. I didn’t get to sleep till 4am & 5am the two nights we went out. And we went during low season. The food in Malta was pretty good, mostly Italian-derived fare. The seafood was especially good.
But as I said before, the natural beauty of the islands of Malta & Gozo are their main attractions. Dwejra, with the Azure Window & the Fungus Rock, and the Dingli Cliffs were the two main highlights for me. There wasn’t a whole lot to say when visiting these attractions, except “wow”. The fortress that is built around and thru Valletta was also pretty impressive – hundreds of years old, well-designed against invasion by sea.
